The MetaEd plugin that generates T-SQL scripts to enable System Versioned Tables (Temporal Tables) on the ODS database in SQL Server 2017. This enables ANSI SQL 2011 queries on the ODS. The scripts the plugin generates do the following: 1) Alters the tables in the source schema (e.g. edfi) to add two required columns SysStartTime and SysEndTime which are added as hidden. 2) Creates a history schema for each source schema defined in MetaEd e.g [edfi_history] for [edfi]. 3) In the history schema, creates the tables that are present in the source schema as bare tables i.e. without constraints, identity, triggers, etc.

Analytics Middle Tier

The Analytics Middle Tier is a set of dimension and fact views created to facilitate easier data modeling in self-service business intelligence tools.

Description

Analytics tools offer the great promise of uncovering insights by making visible the connections between data. The latest generation of tools go further by supporting self-discovery by end-users who can quickly and easily answer their own questions through creation and consumption of powerful data visualizations. These visualizations are built over a data model, which must be sufficiently intuitive to the analyst utilizing it. The core focus of the Ed-Fi ODS is to consolidate disparate transaction data sources at the operational level to facilitate Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) across K-12 source transaction systems. The Ed-Fi ODS is highly normalized, reflecting the Unifying Data Model's design principle of defining and storing data in its most granular form. The systems that write to (and read from) the ODS are many and varied. All of this leads to a necessarily complex data model. While this data model excels at storing and retrieving individual data records, it requires deep understanding before an analyst can build downstream aggregations. Self-service business intelligence would benefit from provision of intuitive logical models overlaying the existing ODS data model, which can be more quickly understood by those designing analytics visualizations.

Ed-Fi ODS/API and Microsoft Power BI Starter Kit (v2)

A starter kit illustrating the use of Microsoft Power BI to create meaningful visualizations from an Ed-Fi ODS. Includes reports at the district, school, teacher, and student level for early warning indicators described in the Balfanz model. Release 2, utilizing the Analytics Middle Tier.

Description

The Sample Education Data Analytics project is a project to illustrate how to use Power BI, a business intelligence (BI) toolset, to create meaningful visualizations from analysis of data contained in an Ed-Fi ODS. The result is a set of reports at the district, school, teacher, and student level for early warning indicators described in the Balfanz model. The proof of concept was intended to explore a few key questions on behalf of the Ed-Fi community, and to generate data that can help community members shape their plans and investments. Those questions were: • What are the capabilities of emerging commercial off the shelf (COTS) toolsets for business intelligence? • How can those COTS BI toolkits be applied to the Ed-Fi operational datastore and data in Ed-Fi format? • How can organizations effectively deploy COTS BI toolkits based on Ed-Fi at scale, including considering both security and ease-of-use? For this question, the POC pursued integration with the K–12 identity platform strategy of Microsoft.

Ed-Fi Model RFP

The purpose of this Model RFP is to support education agencies to develop a Request for Proposals from vendors to implement the Ed-Fi Solution.

Description

The purpose of this Model RFP is to support local education agencies (LEAs), Charter Management Organizations (CMOs), Ed-Fi consortia, state education agencies (SEAs), and Regional Education Centers to develop a Request for Proposals (RFP) from vendors to implement the Ed-Fi Solution. The content of this Model RFP is written as if it were a request from an LEA for an extensive Ed-Fi implementation. LEA users should be able to leverage much of the structure and language from this model RFP to create a reasonable proposal suitable for their project. SEAs and consortia should find the structure and language of this document useful, but may need to make more significant modifications. All education organizations have procurement and purchasing guidelines of their own, and many have templates that must be followed, so you may want to consult your procurement office before starting any RFP.

Teacher Preparation Program Ed-Fi Extensions

The Teacher Preparation Data Model extends the Ed-Fi core data standard with TNTP extensions for Talent Management and extensions for Teacher Preparation Programs. The TPDM extensions enable data to be integrated over the span of a teacher’s entire career, from entry into a TPP, through knowledge and skills demonstrated in fieldwork experiences, to placement and performance as an in-service teacher.

Description

The Teacher Preparation Data Project was initiated in June 2016 to harness and integrate pre-service and in-service data that can be used to better prepare teacher candidates and support the growth of current teachers. The objective of the project was to develop a Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) data standard to enable the appropriate use and exchange of data across teacher preparation partners for the purposes of program improvement. Through a grant funded project, UPD engaged 15 major prep programs and several other education stakeholders to identify key questions which Teacher Preparation Programs, State Education Agencies (SEAs), and Local Education Agencies (LEAs) needed to answer in order to prepare the country’s best teachers. After identifying the data necessary to answer those questions, UPD developed this extension of Ed-Fi known as the Teacher Preparation Data Model (TPDM).

Data Governance and Management – Best Practices Research

This is a set of slides from research done for the Data Governance Collaborative (DGC) on best practices across industries in the area of data management and governance. The DGC is a group of school districts working on governance practices, with the Ed-Fi data model as its organizing structure. The DGC and the accompanying research is funded by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

Description

The Center for Educational Leadership and Technology (CELT) recently completed a Planning Grant on behalf of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation with the objective of establishing a Data Governance Collaborative (DGC) to share data governance practices and tools among a broad range of school districts and charter management organizations. A total of fifteen (15) school districts and charter management organizations have joined the DGC. These include: 1. Aspire CMO - CA 2. Denver Public Schools - CO 3. Fulton County Schools - GA 4. Green Dot CMO - CA 5. Hillsborough County Schools - FL 6. Jefferson County Schools - CO 7. Lake County Schools - FL 8. Metro-Nashville Public Schools- TN 9. The North East Florida Educational Consortium (NEFEC) – FL 10. Pittsburgh Public Schools - PA 11. Prince Georges County Public Schools - MD 12. Rio Rancho Public Schools - NM 13. Shelby County Public Schools - TN 14. St. Louis Public Schools – MO 15. Tulsa Public Schools – OK Part of the goal of the DGC is to use data governance practices as a guide for how to establish an assessment business architecture (e.g., theory of action, assessment framework, and alignment practices). This business architecture will be used to further define and refine how the Ed-Fi structures can be used in the world of assessment data management. With this purpose, one of the deliverables for the grant was a set of research on the best practices in the area of data governance and management. This research was drawn from other sectors (such as health care) as well as education to collect and present various approaches to better data governance. The research is in slide-deck format, and is credited as appropriate to identify the sources of the practices presented.

This project consists of a set of sample scripts for running development, sandbox, or production-oriented configurations of the Ed-Fi ODS / API in Docker containers. Supports versions 2.3 and above.

Description

The scripts and configuration files in this project allow the user inject custom configuration values where appropriate. Some of them will run the ODS in a Windows-based SQL Server container; please note that Microsoft only supports this for development and testing, as of June 2018. For more information on running Docker on Windows, see https://docs.docker.com/docker-for-windows/install/. While these scripts could be used for production, they may prove particularly valuable for development, test, and/or staging environments.

WISEsearch

WISEsearch is a web service used for searching and matching generic datasets.

Description

Wisconsin uses the WISEsearch service to determine the best matches for person (student / staff) searches called from our Ed-Fi API and Wisconsin identifier (WISEid) systems. The WISESearch service attempts to account for poor data quality by performing phonetically and distance data searches. WISEsearch (WISE = Wisconsin Information Systems for Education) is as an MVC Website with web service endpoints indexing and searching sets of data. WISEsearch utilizes Lucene to perform phonetic and fuzzy distance searches on indexed fields and returns ranked results based weighted matches. The search service is flexible and doesn’t require any specific domain model; you only have to provide the field names and values you wish to be searchable. The service also allows you to have multiple indexes for different types of data entities (ex: Person, School).

Michigan Cockpit Application

The Michigan Cockpit Application adds a management layer to the Ed-Fi solution, enabling each district to manage their ODS, API integrations, reports, and user credentials.

Description

The Michigan Cockpit Application adds a management layer to the Ed-Fi solution. It creates an ecosystem where each district can login and manage their Ed-Fi ODS, ingestion of data, outbound data exports, API integrations, reports and user credentials. The cockpit also provides for electronic signatures of data hosting agreements, systems inventory information, integration status information, and opt-in capability for state initiatives. When a districts electronically accepts a data hosting agreement and creates any type of integration (inbound XML, outbound XML, API), the operational data store (ODS) database is automatically provisioned for the district. Finally, the system uses Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager and Microsoft Active-Directory to create and manage a single sign-on environment.

API Profiles

Michigan API Profiles add field level security ability. A profile can be assigned to a vendor to indicate which fields within an API resource they can be read from or written to.

Description

The Ed-Fi ODS API provides the ability to read and write resources in a convenient manner, but the security mechanism authorized access at the API resource level, and there was was no way to control which fields within an API resource could be read from or written to. Thanks to a grant provided by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, API profile capability was added to the Ed-Fi ODS / API v2.0, enabling more fine-grained control over data access. Michigan assisted with the work of identifying criteria for a number of system types including Alert, Assessment, Data Warehouse, Early Childhood, Food Service, Library, Special Education and Transportation. The initial versions of these profiles are available in this contribution to the Ed-Fi Exchange.
